Water Play Safety
Hot summer days provide opportunities to engage in outdoor water play. The splashing, scooping, pouring, and submerging allows children to explore their senses while mastering motor skills, applying math and science concepts, and engaging in social play. Water play can be as simple as using a bin of water with toys to a water table or sprinkler. Regardless of the method safety should always be a priority. Here are some tips for preparing for water play.
Prioritize Supervision: Water play often involves extra outfit changes, preparation and clean-up, changes to routine, and novel play. Be sure before, during, and after water play children are supervised effectively. Schedule extra staff if necessary to ensure smooth transitions and safety.
Choose Resilient Surface for Play: Some surfaces may become slippery, muddy, or hold water. Test the surface’s resilience to water before introducing water play in that area with the children. Having proper drainage is also key.
Maintain Dry Area: Ensure children have an area of reprieve from water play.
Stay Hydrated: Water play does not mean water intake isn’t needed.
