In our first two rounds of facility improvement grants, we received many requests for shade structures for playgrounds. We agree that playgrounds need shade so that kids can get outside safely at any time of day. What better way to add shade to your outdoor play space and what better way to celebrate Earth Day than by planting a tree?! Heritage River Birch Trees work very well for playgrounds in our area. There are many positive attributes to these trees which include:
- They are a native tree
- They attract birds and butterflies
- They are fairly disease resistant and drought tolerant
- They have low branches which allow young children to better interact with the tree
- They are fast growing
- Their multi-trunks add interest and their peeling bark provides an interesting tactile experience
