When EBCAP learned they had been awarded a contract to operate a State Pre-K classroom at their Turner Avenue site in East Providence they were thrilled, but there was a problem – they didn’t have an open classroom space! So they quickly got to work thinking creatively and applied for Race to the Top Facility Grant funding to convert an under-utilized indoor gross motor space into a compliant DCYF Child Care licensed classroom. EBCAP worked in close coordination with a licensed architect and the LISC Technical Assistance team to ensure that the space met all requirements and needs. The modest renovation included the addition of new ADA accessible toilets and sinks located directly in the classroom space. This interior renovation allowed the program to open its state Pre-K classroom in September of 2015. The renovations also focused on ensuring that the Turner Ave. site could maintain a high quality star rating and obtain Department of Education Comprehensive Early Childhood Education Program approval. EBCAP is also working on an improved playground plan, with the support of LISC, to ensure that the children of the center have ample opportunities for active gross motor play. Congratulations to the Turner Avenue Center!
