Center Spotlight: Jamestown Early Learning Center

With the implementation of the 2013 DCYF child care licensing regulations and the subsequent re-measurement of centers, the Jamestown ELC would have needed to drop enrollment by 30 children in order to be in compliance with their newly issued license number. As the only child care center on the island of Jamestown, it was imperative that enrollment be maintained. The Jamestown ELC immediately sought technical assistance from the RICCELFF to help think through possible options for re-working their center space. After considering many options, the center owner worked with a licensed professional to create a plan to build an addition off the back of the building to house the infant classroom. The plan also included a reconfiguration of the toddler and preschool classroom spaces. With a detailed plan and cost estimates in hand, they were ready to apply when Wave 1 of the Early Learning Facility Capital Grants opened in the winter of 2015. Work was completed in the summer of 2015. The project not only helped Jamestown ELC to recapture the lost enrollment, but also improved the space with the addition of more natural light and a better overall flow. Congratulations to the Jamestown Early Learning Center – we were thrilled to play a role in this project!
